…and speaking of great cities

15 June 2011

It’s time for New York. A chance to see a proper film: possibly Beginners and Cave of Forgotten Dreams. Dial M for Murder‘s playing at the Film Forum, as is Bringing Up Baby. I’m also going to see X-Men: First Class with my sister, even though we could see that anywhere (but it’s harder to get together with her elsewhere).

But you know what? For me, New York isn’t about the cultural offerings so much as it is the walking around. The view of the bridge; the slice from that place on the corner. Listening to that couple break up while they walk behind you on the sidewalk. That cheese place in the Village. Looking into people’s first-floor windows on the Upper West Side in the early evening, before they’ve put the shades down. The attitude:

Then there’s the filmic history of New York — which, of course, instructs us to dance:

The Bronx is up and the Battery’s down, friends. It’s a wonderful town.

I agree. Sitting in a very narrow ethnic restaurant with only a few tables and watching the customers go in and out.
