Trailer watch: “Miss Representation” (2011)
29 March 2011
Sing it, Margaret Cho: “The media treats women like shit!”
Twisty Faster notes her doubts about a trailer that shows this much T&A (and I agree entirely), but I’ll bet we’re all going to see it anyway.
And just to contradict myself, let me say how much I enjoyed watching the over-the-top sexist, ridiculously violent B-movie spoof Machete (2010). And not just because it’s a who’s who of great Latina/o actors, and not just because it rips apart anti-immigration attitudes and vigilante violence. I liked it for the camp. Hell, I’ll do anything to see Michelle Rodriguez in this outfit, watch the scene with all the lowriders advancing on the bad guys by using their hydraulics, and hear lines from dumbass gringos like, “You ever noticed how you let a Mexican into your house just because he’s got gardening tools? No questions asked, you just let him right in. Could have a chainsaw, you know, a machete….” This trailer reveals so many of this film’s delights:
But now that I think about it, how is it possible Michelle Rodriguez doesn’t have her own franchise by now? Let’s hope that Machete director Richard Rodriguez has a plan to change that and finally give the ladies a little love rather than keep treating them like eye candy.
